Cozy up...this will be a good one. We expect the hard maple to impart flavors of maple candy, nutmeg and cinnamon with a hint of cocoa to tie into the full-bodied creamy finish of SnowGhost Winter Lager. Happy Firkin Halloween

In addition to judging the Whitefish Costume Contest this Halloween, Great Northern Brewing has another treat up our sleeve.

We will be tapping a Frog Hop Firkin...for all you frog hop lovers out there!

"The base beer is Frog Hop and it was dosed with a blender full of chopped up fresh Mt. Hood hops from my yard.  My inspiration for that was looking at the hops hanging over my deck every day and trying to think of the best way to use them.  My goal was to take Frog Hop up a few levels.   By grinding them up I'm hoping to release all of the lupulin to the beer."

-Head Brewer Joe

Firkin Friday

Don't forget about Frequent Firkin Fridays!

We will be tapping a Firkin Keg of Bluebird Day IPA with experimental hops XO727. Come after 3p on Friday and give this one a try. You wont be disappointed.

While our brewers were evaluating some freshly arrived hops samples the aromatic qualities of one variety were obvious as soon as they opened the bag. An experimental hop variety known only as X07270 , it is reputed to provide a strong dank and resinous character with spicy, tangerine and black pepper aromas and flavors. It seemed like a perfect choice to try as a alternate dry hop for our Bluebird Day Double IPA.

Firkin Tapping

Join us in a new Draught House tradition - the occasional tapping of a firkin keg!

Next on the docket is Falconer's Flight Pale Ale!

Using the base beer as Big Mountain Tea Pale Ale (TPA) - before the bergamot flavoring was added - our brewers dry-hopped with the Falconer's Flight 7-Cs hops blend. This particular blend of hops will give the traditionally cask-conditioned Pale Ale strong fruit and citrus characteristics with layers of spicy and earthy overtones.

Some background on firkins:

Firkin beer is unpasteurized and naturally carbonated and conditioned inside the firkin through the use of active yeast. It is typically served at a slightly warmer temperature than usual to allow for the yeast to stay active and keep the beer carbonated. In terms of size, a firkin is equal to just under 11 gallons...so don't miss out!

Hildegaard's Bitter Pale Ale Release

Hildegaard's Bitter Pale Ale Release

Named after Glacier Hops Ranch founder's great aunt - Hildegaard is the hop farm's hop picker. She works tirelessly during the hop picking season. She was imported from Northern Bavaria several years ago and has been a fixure of the farm since. Coincidentally, the patron Saint of beer is Abbess Hildegaard Von Bingen, a 12th Century "mystic" who described how hops could be used to preserve liquids.

Since 2013, we've teamed up with Glacier Hops Ranch to explore the extent of how we can cultivate Montana hops on a commercial scale. After field testing over 40 varieties, we're finding that commercial production is more than feasible. Northwest Montana-grown hops produce bold and bright aromas that are perfect for brewing. If it couldn't get any better, Glacier Hops has now developed a new process of how we use those hops with thier creation of Hopzoil.

At the peak of ripeness, Glacier Hops Ranch takes freshly harvested hops and within hours, they capture all of the fresh, aromatic oils through a proprietary steam-distillation process. Instead of the traditional dry-hopping brewing method using heat-dried, processed hops in a late batch addition, our brewers infused those freshly captured hop oils right back into the beer with the late addition of Glacier Hop's Hopzoil.

You'll find Hildegaard's Bitter Pale Ale to have a refreshingly complex aromatic flavor profile that you'd normally only get with a seasonal fresh hop beer....but with just a enough of hoppy bitterness that comes from the Chinook Hopzoil. Join us for her release in the Draught House this Friday! From 5 to 10 pm, there will be $3 pints, $8 growler fills, and $2 steins for stein clubbers.
