Hildegaard's Bitter Pale Ale Release

  • Great Northern Brewery 2 Central Avenue Whitefish, MT, 59937 United States (map)

Named after Glacier Hops Ranch founder's great aunt - Hildegaard is the hop farm's hop picker. She works tirelessly during the hop picking season. She was imported from Northern Bavaria several years ago and has been a fixure of the farm since. Coincidentally, the patron Saint of beer is Abbess Hildegaard Von Bingen, a 12th Century "mystic" who described how hops could be used to preserve liquids.

Since 2013, we've teamed up with Glacier Hops Ranch to explore the extent of how we can cultivate Montana hops on a commercial scale. After field testing over 40 varieties, we're finding that commercial production is more than feasible. Northwest Montana-grown hops produce bold and bright aromas that are perfect for brewing. If it couldn't get any better, Glacier Hops has now developed a new process of how we use those hops with thier creation of Hopzoil.

At the peak of ripeness, Glacier Hops Ranch takes freshly harvested hops and within hours, they capture all of the fresh, aromatic oils through a proprietary steam-distillation process. Instead of the traditional dry-hopping brewing method using heat-dried, processed hops in a late batch addition, our brewers infused those freshly captured hop oils right back into the beer with the late addition of Glacier Hop's Hopzoil.

You'll find Hildegaard's Bitter Pale Ale to have a refreshingly complex aromatic flavor profile that you'd normally only get with a seasonal fresh hop beer....but with just a enough of hoppy bitterness that comes from the Chinook Hopzoil. Join us for her release in the Draught House this Friday! From 5 to 10 pm, there will be $3 pints, $8 growler fills, and $2 steins for stein clubbers.
